How to Distinguish Between Heavy Goods and Volume Goods

How to Differentiate Between Heavy Goods and Light Goods
In the logistics industry, the classification of goods is a very important part. Among them, distinguishing between heavy goods and light goods is one of the key factors in determining transportation costs, warehouse space planning, and overall logistics efficiency. So, what exactly are heavy goods? What are light goods? And how should they be defined?
Heavy goods usually refer to items with a relatively high unit volume weight, such as steel, cement, bricks, and other building materials. These items have a high density, meaning their weight far exceeds that of ordinary goods within the same volume. For example, one cubic meter of steel may weigh up to 7,850 kilograms, while one cubic meter of wood might only weigh around 500 kilograms. From a weight perspective, heavy goods require stronger carrying capacity for transportation, and safety issues must be particularly noted during loading and unloading processes.
In contrast, light goods refer to those with a low unit volume weight but occupy a large amount of space, such as foam plastic products, inflatable film, and packaged goods. Although these items appear bulky, they are actually not heavy. Take common courier packages as an example; a standard-sized carton filled with books may feel heavy, but if it’s filled with air or lightweight filler material, even a large box can feel light. This characteristic often leads to these goods being charged by volume rather than weight.
To better understand these two types of goods and their differences, we can explain through some practical cases. For instance, a logistics company received an order including several tons of steel materials and a large number of product packaging boxes for e-commerce promotional activities. In this case, the steel materials are clearly typical heavy goods, while those packaging boxes belong to typical light goods. If handled in a traditional manner based on weight charges, it would obviously lack fairness because for trucks, the fuel consumption required to load several tons of steel is almost the same as transporting the same quantity of packaging boxes, yet due to the latter occupying more space, in actual operation, volume-based charging methods are often used.
In terms of selecting suitable transport tools, heavy goods and light goods also have different requirements. For heavy goods, due to their higher demand for vehicle load capacity, heavy-duty trucks or special engineering vehicles are typically chosen for transportation; whereas for light goods, box trucks or other models with larger internal volumes are more commonly used. Meanwhile, considering the warehousing process, heavy goods are generally stored on shelves at higher ground levels to make use of vertical space; whereas light goods are more suitable for placement near passages for quick access.
In recent years, with the rapid development of the e-commerce industry, an increasing number of companies have begun to pay attention to how to effectively manage inventory and optimize supply chain processes. Against this backdrop, correctly identifying and managing heavy goods and light goods has become increasingly important. According to statistics from a well-known e-commerce platform, in recent years, there has been a growing demand among online shopping users for high-value heavy goods like large furniture and electronic products, which not only tests merchants' own logistics systems but also pushes the entire industry towards a more intelligent direction.
In summary, whether from a theoretical or practical perspective, accurately distinguishing between heavy goods and light goods is one of the fundamental tasks to ensure smooth logistics operations. Only through a deep understanding of the characteristics of various goods can more scientific and reasonable transportation plans be formulated, thereby enhancing corporate competitiveness and service quality. In the future, with the application and development of new technologies, it is believed that this field will see more innovations and breakthroughs!

December 12, 2024The experience was very good. I was still struggling to compare it with other companies. I went to the site a few days ago and wanted to implement it as soon as possible. I didn't expect that everything exceeded my expectations. The company is very large, with several hundred square meters. The employees are also dedicated and responsible. There is also a wall of certificates. I placed an order on the spot. It turned out that I did not make a wrong choice. The company's service attitude is very good and professional. The person who contacted me explained various things in detail in advance. After placing the order, the follow-up was also very timely, and they took the initiative to report the progress to me. In short, I am very satisfied and recommend this company!
