After registering a company in Hong Kong, opening a local bank account is virtually an unavoidable step for all business owners. In reality, however, many entrepreneurs receive rejection letters from banks after submitting their documents-even after repeatedly resubmitting supplementary materials. Often, the issue does not lie with the company itself, but rather with the failure to meet several non-negotiable, mandatory requirements in the bank’s due diligence process.

5 Mandatory Requirements for Opening a Bank Account for a Hong Kong Company

I. The Company Must Be Legally Registered and in Good Standing

1. The company must hold a valid Certificate of Incorporation and Business Registration Certificate, both issued by the Hong Kong Companies Registry.

2. The company name, registered address, and details of directors and shareholders must exactly match those recorded in official registration documents-no unupdated changes may exist.

3. The company must not be struck off the register, dissolved, or subject to a court order for winding-up.

II. Directors and Shareholders Must Have Verifiable and Stable Identities

1. All directors and shareholders holding more than 10% of the company’s shares must provide original government-issued identification documents accepted by the issuing country’s official platforms, along with clear photocopies.

2. Non-Hong Kong residents must additionally submit proof of residential address issued within the past three months. This address must reflect an actual place of residence-not a P.O. box, mail forwarding service, or virtual office address.

3. In cases involving multi-tiered shareholding structures, banks may require beneficial ownership disclosure down to the ultimate natural person(s), together with verification of their professional background and the legitimate source of funds.

III. Business Operations Must Be Genuine and Traceable

1. Banks will review the company’s business transaction records from the past three months-including contracts, invoices, logistics documentation, or screenshots of e-commerce platform orders-as supporting evidence.

2. Pure shell structures or offshore holding arrangements lacking real commercial activity are typically unable to pass the due diligence stage.

3. If the company has not yet commenced operations, a comprehensive business plan must be provided-detailing target markets, customer profiles, projected revenue timelines, and intended use of funds.

IV. The Registered Address Must Be Physically Accessible and Compliant

1. Banks require the registered address to be a genuine physical office space capable of receiving bank correspondence and accommodating on-site verification visits.

2. Standalone postal boxes, shared workspaces, or service providers offering only virtual addresses are generally not accepted by major banks.

3. If the registered address is residential in nature, confirmation must be obtained that local regulations permit commercial activities at that location, supported by written consent from the property owner and other relevant documentation.

V. In-Person Bank Interview Is Mandatory and Cannot Be Substituted

1. At least one director must attend an in-person account opening interview at a designated branch in Hong Kong; some banks do not accept video-based identity verification.

2. Prior appointment is required, and all original documents must be brought to the interview. Directors may be asked on-site to explain their business model, fund inflow/outflow pathways, and operational plans for the next three years.

3. If a director is unable to travel to Hong Kong, alternative arrangements must be discussed with the bank in advance-but approval is rare and applicable only under extremely limited circumstances.

The above outlines five non-negotiable requirements in the Hong Kong company bank account opening process. Should you have related questions or wish to explore further details, we recommend proactively consulting your target bank-taking into account your company’s specific structure and operational stage-to confirm its latest due diligence expectations, and allowing ample time to prepare all required documentation.

The experience was very good. I was still struggling to compare it with other companies. I went to the site a few days ago and wanted to implement it as soon as possible. I didn't expect that everything exceeded my expectations. The company is very large, with several hundred square meters. The employees are also dedicated and responsible. There is also a wall of certificates. I placed an order on the spot. It turned out that I did not make a wrong choice. The company's service attitude is very good and professional. The person who contacted me explained various things in detail in advance. After placing the order, the follow-up was also very timely, and they took the initiative to report the progress to me. In short, I am very satisfied and recommend this company!

I originally thought that they only did mainland business, but I didn’t expect that they had been doing Hong Kong business and were doing very well. After the on-site interview, I decided to ask them to arrange the registration of my Hong Kong company. They helped me complete it very quickly and provided all the necessary information. The efficiency was awesome. It turns out that professional things should be done by professionals.👍

In order to register a company in Hong Kong, I compared many platforms and stores and finally chose this store. The merchant said that they have been operating offline for more than 10 years and are indeed an old team of corporate services. The efficiency is first-class, and the customer service is also very professional.
