Mainland Chinese Residents Opening Bank Accounts in Hong Kong? Here’s the Latest Document Checklist for Bank of China (Hong Kong)!
Many mainland residents consider opening a bank account in Hong Kong to meet practical needs such as cross-border fund management, children’s education, asset allocation, or business-related activities. As one of Hong Kong’s major licensed banks-and benefiting from seamless integration with the Bank of China’s mainland network-Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited (“BOCHK”) is often the preferred choice. However, opening an account is not as simple as walking into a branch. Specific requirements apply to document preparation, identity verification, and in-person interviews-and these requirements may change dynamically in response to evolving regulatory conditions.

Basic Eligibility Requirements for Mainland Residents Opening Accounts with BOCHK
1. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and possess full civil capacity.
2. A valid Resident Identity Card of the People’s Republic of China is required.
3. A valid Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao (commonly known as the “Hong Kong-Macao Travel Permit”), issued by public security authorities, is mandatory. The permit must include an active endorsement for travel to Hong Kong-either an Individual Visit Endorsement (“G” endorsement) or a Business Visit Endorsement (“S” endorsement). A Family Visit Endorsement (“T” endorsement) is generally not accepted.
4. Applicants must attend an in-person interview and complete identity verification at a designated BOCHK branch on the day of account opening. This process cannot be delegated to a third party or conducted remotely.
5. Some branches may require advance appointment for account opening; walk-in applicants without prior booking may not be served immediately.
Updated List of Required Documents
1. Original and photocopy of the applicant’s mainland Resident Identity Card (both front and back sides must be clearly legible).
2. Original Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao, plus photocopies of the visa page and the most recent Hong Kong entry stamp page (must reflect the latest valid entry record).
3. Proof of residential address, issued within the past three months and clearly displaying the applicant’s full name and complete address. Acceptable documents include: utility bills (water, electricity, or gas), mobile phone bills, credit card statements, tax payment certificates issued by government departments, or social insurance contribution records. Property ownership certificates or tenancy agreements are not accepted on their own and must be submitted together with one of the above-listed documents.
4. Proof of income or employment, to support assessment of the intended account usage. Examples include: an employer-issued letter of employment bearing an official company seal; bank statements showing salary deposits for the past six months; a copy of the business license (for self-employed individuals); or official tax payment certificates.
5. Completed account opening application forms and customer information update forms-distributed on-site and requiring original handwritten signatures (printed or typed signatures are not acceptable).
6. For applicants wishing to activate Internet Banking or Mobile Banking services, a mainland mobile phone number registered under the applicant’s name is required. This number must be capable of receiving SMS verification codes.
Key Notes and Common Restrictions
1. BOCHK does not accept account applications from mainland residents who present only a passport and no valid Hong Kong-Macao Travel Permit.
2. Applications from minors, individuals without stable income, or those unable to provide a clear explanation of fund sources or intended use are typically subject to lower approval rates.
3. Newly opened accounts have initial functional limitations-for example, transfer limits via non-counter channels, foreign currency exchange permissions, and eligibility to purchase investment products. Upgrades require fulfillment of additional criteria after account opening.
4. Account activation must be completed in person while physically present in Hong Kong. Certain accounts also require a minimum initial deposit and maintenance of that balance for a specified period; otherwise, the account may be classified as dormant.
5. BOCHK reserves the right to conduct due diligence on any account application and may request supplementary documentation or extend the review period, which typically takes three to seven working days.
The above outlines the primary documentation and procedural requirements currently applicable to mainland residents seeking to open personal bank accounts with Bank of China (Hong Kong). Should you have further questions-or wish to learn more about branch appointment procedures, differences among account types, or post-opening account maintenance-we recommend contacting BOCHK’s official customer service channels directly for the most up-to-date guidance.

December 12, 2024The experience was very good. I was still struggling to compare it with other companies. I went to the site a few days ago and wanted to implement it as soon as possible. I didn't expect that everything exceeded my expectations. The company is very large, with several hundred square meters. The employees are also dedicated and responsible. There is also a wall of certificates. I placed an order on the spot. It turned out that I did not make a wrong choice. The company's service attitude is very good and professional. The person who contacted me explained various things in detail in advance. After placing the order, the follow-up was also very timely, and they took the initiative to report the progress to me. In short, I am very satisfied and recommend this company!

After the on-site interview, I decided to ask them to arrange the registration of my Hong Kong company. They helped me complete it very quickly and provided all the necessary information. The efficiency was awesome. It turns out that professional things should be done by professionals.👍

December 16, 2024In order to register a company in Hong Kong, I compared many platforms and stores and finally chose this store. The merchant said that they have been operating offline for more than 10 years and are indeed an old team of corporate services. The efficiency is first-class, and the customer service is also very professional.
