Hong Kong Companies Do Not Have VAT Registration Numbers-Clarify This and Stop Being Misled by “UK VAT” or “EU VAT”
Hong Kong does not have a Value Added Tax (VAT) system; therefore, there is no such thing as a “Hong Kong company VAT registration number.” This is a common misconception among cross-border professionals who mistakenly apply VAT rules from jurisdictions such as the European Union, the United Kingdom, or the Middle East to Hong Kong. Instead, Hong Kong operates a simple tax regime centered on Profits Tax, Salaries Tax, and Property Tax-and imposes neither VAT, sales tax, nor consumption tax. A Hong Kong company is required to register for VAT only in overseas jurisdictions where its business activities trigger local VAT obligations-not in Hong Kong itself.

VAT obligations are determined by the location of business operations, not by the place of company incorporation.
Whether VAT registration is required depends on whether actual commercial activities fall within the VAT jurisdiction of a particular country. For example:
1. A Hong Kong company selling digital services (e.g., SaaS, online courses) directly to UK consumers must register for UK VAT if its annual turnover exceeds £85,000;
2. For B2C goods sales into the EU, registration under the One Stop Shop (OSS) scheme requires VAT registration in any one EU Member State, resulting in a VAT number issued by that country;
3. If a Hong Kong company establishes a warehouse in the UAE and ships goods locally to UAE customers, it must register for UAE VAT once its annual taxable turnover exceeds AED 375,000.
Key compliance requirements must not be overlooked
After registration, timely VAT returns must be filed (e.g., quarterly in the UK; quarterly consolidated returns under the EU OSS), with late submissions potentially incurring penalties and interest;
Invoices must include all legally mandated elements: a valid VAT number, applicable VAT rate, and VAT amount-otherwise, customers cannot claim input tax credits;
Complete transaction records-including logistics documentation, payment evidence, and proof of customer location (e.g., IP address, billing address, bank details)-must be retained for at least six years (UK) or ten years (certain Middle Eastern countries);
If third-party platforms (e.g., Amazon, Shopify) are used, confirm whether they assume collection and remittance responsibilities (e.g., UK IOSS or EU OSS platform obligations); however, platform-assisted collection does not relieve the business of its own registration and ongoing compliance obligations.
Common misconceptions to avoid
× Assuming that “Hong Kong incorporation + offshore bank account = automatic tax exemption”: Tax residency and VAT liability depend on substantive business activities-not merely incorporation location-and cannot be avoided solely through offshore structuring;
× Mistaking the Hong Kong Business Registration Number (BR Number) or the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) File Number for a VAT number: These identifiers differ fundamentally in legal nature and purpose, and must never be used interchangeably;
× Overlooking changes to Low-Value Consignment Relief (LVCR): The UK has abolished the VAT exemption for imports valued at £15 or less; the EU eliminated LVCR for all B2C imports outside the IOSS framework effective 1 July 2021-meaning all such imports now require VAT reporting and payment.
The above outlines the fundamental nature of so-called “Hong Kong company VAT registration numbers” and highlights key VAT compliance requirements applicable to Hong Kong businesses operating overseas. We hope this information proves helpful.

December 12, 2024The experience was very good. I was still struggling to compare it with other companies. I went to the site a few days ago and wanted to implement it as soon as possible. I didn't expect that everything exceeded my expectations. The company is very large, with several hundred square meters. The employees are also dedicated and responsible. There is also a wall of certificates. I placed an order on the spot. It turned out that I did not make a wrong choice. The company's service attitude is very good and professional. The person who contacted me explained various things in detail in advance. After placing the order, the follow-up was also very timely, and they took the initiative to report the progress to me. In short, I am very satisfied and recommend this company!
