It is commonly rumored among mainland Chinese residents that opening a personal bank account with China Minsheng Bank Hong Kong is “extremely difficult” or requires “personal connections.” In reality, however, as long as all required documents are complete, the process is clearly defined, and timing is well-planned, most applicants can successfully open an account within one to two working days. That said, this does not mean one can decide spontaneously and travel to Hong Kong without preparation-banks rigorously verify identity authenticity and the legitimacy of fund sources, and certain steps cannot be completed remotely.

What Documents Do Mainland Chinese Need to Open a China Minsheng Banking Corporation Account in Hong Kong, How Many Visits Are Required, and How Long Does It Take?

Essential Document Checklist

1. A valid People’s Republic of China ordinary passport (must be the 10-year private-use version; the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents-commonly known as the “Home Return Permit”-is not accepted as the primary identification document).

2. A valid Home Return Permit (if already held and still within its validity period), which may be submitted alongside the passport to strengthen identity verification.

3. A valid Hong Kong Immigration Department-issued document proving lawful stay in Hong Kong (e.g., a copy of the tourist endorsement page, transit endorsement record, or an approved visa approval letter for employment, study, or dependent status).

4. Original proof of residential address (issued within the past three months; only documents issued by mainland Chinese or Hong Kong-based institutions are accepted-such as utility bills water, electricity, gas, bank statements, credit card statements, or official tax notices. Courier receipts, mobile phone bills, and electronic invoices from online platforms are not accepted.)

5. Proof of occupation and income:  - For employed individuals: an official letter of employment issued by the mainland employer, bearing the company’s official seal and specifying position, date of employment, and monthly salary;  - For self-employed individuals: six months of personal bank statements plus a summary of business contracts;  - For retirees: a retirement certificate and records of pension disbursements.

6. A written statement explaining the intended use of the account (handwritten, concise, and specific-for example: “to pay tuition fees for my child studying in Hong Kong” or “to receive financial gifts from overseas family members”; vague or ambiguous wording is unacceptable).

In-Person Procedure & Frequency

1. Advance Appointment: An appointment must be scheduled in advance via China Minsheng Bank Hong Kong’s official website or designated channels. Walk-in customers are generally not served.

2. First Visit to Hong Kong: Bring all original documents to a designated branch (e.g., the Central Head Office or the Harbour City Branch in Tsim Sha Tsui-both support account openings for mainland customers) to complete the face-to-face interview, preliminary document review, and KYC questionnaire.

3. Second Visit to Hong Kong (if required): Approximately 30% of applicants are asked to resubmit materials due to issues such as non-compliant address proof format, incomplete income documentation, or unclear fund-purpose statements-and must therefore re-enter Hong Kong for re-verification.

4. Account Activation: Upon approval, the bank will send an SMS notification. The applicant must collect the physical debit card and set the PIN at the counter within seven days; failure to do so will result in automatic account cancellation.

Key Notes

1. All Chinese-language documents issued outside Hong Kong must be accompanied by a simplified Chinese direct translation (no notarization required), and the translation must precisely match the original content.

2. Discrepancies between the passport’s place of issuance and the address shown on the proof of residence are common-but applicants must proactively explain them in a supporting letter (e.g., “My household registration is in Beijing, but I currently reside in Shanghai.”)

3. Third-party account opening is strictly prohibited. For minors, both parents must attend in person and provide the child’s birth certificate plus a notarized document confirming guardianship.

4. Internet banking and mobile banking services cannot be activated on the day of account opening. They become available for self-registration starting on the second business day after backend system approval.

5. Minimum balance requirements, cross-border remittance fees, annual fees, and other terms are subject to the bank’s written disclosure at the time of account opening-and vary significantly across account types.

The above outlines practical considerations for mainland Chinese residents opening personal accounts with China Minsheng Bank Hong Kong. The experience was very good. I was still struggling to compare it with other companies. I went to the site a few days ago and wanted to implement it as soon as possible. I didn't expect that everything exceeded my expectations. The company is very large, with several hundred square meters. The employees are also dedicated and responsible. There is also a wall of certificates. I placed an order on the spot. It turned out that I did not make a wrong choice. The company's service attitude is very good and professional. The person who contacted me explained various things in detail in advance. After placing the order, the follow-up was also very timely, and they took the initiative to report the progress to me. In short, I am very satisfied and recommend this company!

When I first consulted customer service, they recommended an agent to me. They were very professional and patient and provided excellent service. They answered my questions as they came in. This 2-to-1 service model is very thoughtful. I had a lot of questions that I didn’t understand, and it’s not easy to register a company in Hong Kong. Fortunately, I have you.

I originally thought that they only did mainland business, but I didn’t expect that they had been doing Hong Kong business and were doing very well. After the on-site interview, I decided to ask them to arrange the registration of my Hong Kong company. They helped me complete it very quickly and provided all the necessary information. The efficiency was awesome. It turns out that professional things should be done by professionals.👍

In order to register a company in Hong Kong, I compared many platforms and stores and finally chose this store. The merchant said that they have been operating offline for more than 10 years and are indeed an old team of corporate services. The efficiency is first-class, and the customer service is also very professional.
