Hong Kong Account Opening Real-Life Guide How an Ordinary Individual Can Successfully Open a Personal Account at Bank of Communications (Hong Kong) Limited
Bank of Communications (Hong Kong) Limited is one of the earliest-established and most extensively networked licensed Chinese-funded banks in Hong Kong. It maintains a relatively friendly policy toward mainland Chinese residents seeking to open personal accounts; however, it does not offer “walk-in” account opening. In practice, the eligibility requirements, documentation, interview details, and post-opening activation procedures are significantly more specific than most applicants anticipate.

This article is based on firsthand account-opening experiences conducted in Hong Kong during Q3 2025, supplemented by follow-up interviews with successfully onboarded customers. It reconstructs the authentic, step-by-step pathway followed by ordinary mainland Chinese residents (i.e., individuals holding neither Hong Kong permanent residency nor local income) who successfully opened personal accounts at Bank of Communications (Hong Kong) Limited.
I. Three Mandatory Prerequisites to Confirm Before Opening an Account
1. Be at least 18 years of age and hold a valid People’s Republic of China passport (Hong Kong-Macau Travel Permits are not accepted);
2. Provide verifiable proof of mainland-based assets (not merely bank statement screenshots), such as
Original fixed-term deposit certificates issued within the past six months;
Original fund or insurance policies clearly indicating the applicant’s full name and the corresponding monetary value; or
Photocopies of Mainland property ownership certificates bearing official seals;
3. Make an appointment in advance-all branches of Bank of Communications (Hong Kong) strictly prohibit walk-in applications. The official online appointment portal opens daily at 900 a.m., with only 30 appointment slots available per day. Applicants are strongly advised to secure their preferred time slot 5-7 business days in advance.
II. Five Categories of Documents Required On-Site (All Must Be Presented-No Exceptions)
1. Original People’s Republic of China passport + photocopies (including the data page and the most recent Hong Kong entry stamp page);
2. Original Mainland Chinese identity card + photocopies of both front and back sides;
3. Proof of Mainland residential address issued within the past three months (e.g., utility bills, credit card statements, or mobile phone invoices), displaying the applicant’s full name and complete address (PDF printouts are invalid);
4. Original asset certification documents (as specified in Section I.2 above); the bank verifies these originals on-site and returns them immediately after verification;
5. Completed “Personal Account Opening Application Form” (downloadable from the bank’s official website), signed manually in black ink (printed or electronic signatures are not accepted).
III. Key Details During the In-Person Interview
The interviewing officer will verify the source of funds. Questions typically focus on
• Whether the deposited funds represent the applicant’s own lawful income; and
• Whether the applicant intends to transfer substantial sums into the Hong Kong account.
Responses must be concise, consistent, and unambiguous-vague answers such as “funds provided by family members” or “earnings from business operations” often trigger further detailed scrutiny.
English proficiency is not mandatory interviews may be conducted in either Mandarin or Cantonese. However, the applicant must appear in person-proxy representation is strictly prohibited.
A physical debit card cannot be collected on the same day. The first Visa Debit Card will be mailed to the Hong Kong address provided during application within approximately 7-10 working days. If no Hong Kong address is available, applicants may provide a friend’s or relative’s Hong Kong address-or use a designated third-party logistics partner authorized by Bank of Communications (Hong Kong).
Online banking and mobile banking services are activated by default. During the on-site process, applicants must bind their Mainland mobile phone number to receive SMS-based one-time verification codes.
IV. Two Critical Post-Opening Operational Points
1. Account Activation The first deposit must be completed within 30 calendar days after account opening. The minimum required amount is HK$1,000-and the deposit must be made via non-cash means, e.g., telegraphic transfer (TT) or SWIFT remittance from the Mainland. Transfers via Alipay or WeChat Pay are not accepted.
2. Annual Fee and Minimum Balance Requirement Standard savings accounts carry no annual fee. However, if the average daily balance falls below HK$10,000 for six consecutive months, a monthly account maintenance fee of HK$30 will be levied.
The above outlines the practical, step-by-step process for ordinary individuals to open a personal account at Bank of Communications (Hong Kong) Limited. We hope this guide proves helpful to you.

December 12, 2024The experience was very good. I was still struggling to compare it with other companies. I went to the site a few days ago and wanted to implement it as soon as possible. I didn't expect that everything exceeded my expectations. The company is very large, with several hundred square meters. The employees are also dedicated and responsible. There is also a wall of certificates. I placed an order on the spot. It turned out that I did not make a wrong choice. The company's service attitude is very good and professional. The person who contacted me explained various things in detail in advance. After placing the order, the follow-up was also very timely, and they took the initiative to report the progress to me. In short, I am very satisfied and recommend this company!

They answered my questions as they came in. This 2-to-1 service model is very thoughtful. I had a lot of questions that I didn’t understand, and it’s not easy to register a company in Hong Kong. Fortunately, I have you.

December 19, 2024I originally thought that they only did mainland business, but I didn’t expect that they had been doing Hong Kong business and were doing very well. After the on-site interview, I decided to ask them to arrange the registration of my Hong Kong company. They helped me complete it very quickly and provided all the necessary information. The efficiency was awesome. It turns out that professional things should be done by professionals.👍

December 16, 2024In order to register a company in Hong Kong, I compared many platforms and stores and finally chose this store. The merchant said that they have been operating offline for more than 10 years and are indeed an old team of corporate services. The efficiency is first-class, and the customer service is also very professional.
