Company registration information in Hong Kong is public data. Any individual or organization may legally access it free of charge-no registration is required, no eligibility criteria apply, and no fees are charged. This transparency constitutes one of the key institutional foundations underpinning Hong Kong’s status as an international business hub. However, in practice, many users-unfamiliar with statutory channels and data logic-mistakenly navigate to third-party paid platforms and even submit sensitive personal information, thereby inadvertently increasing their risks.

This article systematically outlines the lawful, no-registration-required avenues for accessing company information, along with key restrictions, common misconceptions, and compliance boundaries. It draws upon the latest publicly issued guidance (updated in 2025) from the Hong Kong Companies Registry (CR), the Companies Ordinance (Cap. 622), and relevant judicial precedents.

Hong Kong Company Information Search Unregistered Platform Channels and Compliance Operation Guidelines

I. The Sole No-Registration Query Portal The Companies Registry’s “Online Search Centre”

This platform is operated directly by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government. Its official URL is https//www.icris.cr.gov.hk (note only this domain is legitimate; any other website containing “hk” or “gov” but differing from the above path is a counterfeit). Launched in 2013, the system abolished account registration requirements entirely as of 2025. Members of the public may now use the “Simple Search” function directly-entering either the company’s full Chinese or English registered name, or its company number (typically an eight-digit number)-to retrieve basic registration records.

Important notes

1. Searches must use the company’s complete legal name as recorded on its Certificate of Incorporation. Abbreviations, informal names, or former names will not yield matches.

2. If the company number is unknown, users may employ the “Advanced Search” function, combining criteria such as business nature and date-of-incorporation range to assist identification.

3. The system does not support fuzzy matching or phonetic (e.g., pinyin) search. For example, entering “Tencent” will not retrieve “Tencent Holdings Limited”; the full registered name must be entered exactly.

II. Core Information Available Free of Charge (Mandated by Law)

Pursuant to Section 30 of the Companies Ordinance and Schedule 3 thereto, the following information is subject to mandatory public disclosure. It is displayed in real time on the Online Search Centre and is unrestricted in access

1. Company name (in both Chinese and English), registered address (not necessarily the operational/business address), and company type (e.g., private company limited by shares);

2. Date of incorporation, company number, and current status (“still existing” or “dissolved”);

3. Names of directors, last four digits of their Hong Kong identity card/passport numbers (a privacy safeguard mechanism), nationality, and residential address (displayed only at city and country level-street addresses and building numbers are excluded);

4. Name of the company secretary and their correspondence address (likewise displayed only at city level);

5. Date of submission of the most recently filed Annual Return (Form NAR1), together with a summary of the share capital structure stated therein.

III. Categories of Information Explicitly Not Disclosed (Legally Prohibited from Disclosure)

Users should exercise particular caution regarding certain third-party websites that falsely claim to provide “full shareholder ID numbers”, “bank account details”, or “internal meeting minutes”. Such claims are either unlawful or outright fraudulent

1. Shareholder identity information (for non-listed companies) Names, shareholding percentages, ID/passport numbers, and residential addresses of shareholders in private (non-listed) companies are not made publicly available.

2. Full financial statements Only listed companies are required to file financial reports with the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX); private companies are not obligated to submit financial statements to the CR-and therefore none appear on the Online Search Centre.

3. Directors’ full residential addresses and complete ID/passport numbers The CR discloses only the city of residence and the last four digits of the director’s identification document number. All other personal details are strictly protected under the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (Cap. 486).

4. Company seal designs, full text of the company’s Articles of Association, draft versions of unfiled amendment documents, etc., fall outside the scope of statutory disclosure requirements.

IV. High-Frequency Operational Risk Alerts (90% of User Errors Occur Here)

1. Never enter any ID number, mobile phone number, or bank card information on any webpage whose domain is not cr.gov.hk.

2. A status marked “Dissolved by Notice” does not equate to “Deregistered”. Some companies remain legally extant while undergoing liquidation proceedings.

3. For companies whose Chinese names contain traditional Chinese characters, searches must use the corresponding traditional characters. Mixing simplified and traditional characters will return zero results.

4. If a company’s status appears as “Struck Off”, this indicates formal removal from the register under Section 749 of the Companies Ordinance. However, outstanding rights and obligations-including creditor-debtor relationships-may persist; users should consult related announcements published by the High Court for further clarification.

The above sets out the end-to-end essentials and legal boundaries governing no-registration-required company information queries in Hong Kong. We hope this guide proves helpful to you.

The experience was very good. I was still struggling to compare it with other companies. I went to the site a few days ago and wanted to implement it as soon as possible. I didn't expect that everything exceeded my expectations. The company is very large, with several hundred square meters. The employees are also dedicated and responsible. There is also a wall of certificates. I placed an order on the spot. It turned out that I did not make a wrong choice. The company's service attitude is very good and professional. The person who contacted me explained various things in detail in advance. After placing the order, the follow-up was also very timely, and they took the initiative to report the progress to me. In short, I am very satisfied and recommend this company!

When I first consulted customer service, they recommended an agent to me. They were very professional and patient and provided excellent service. They answered my questions as they came in. This 2-to-1 service model is very thoughtful. I had a lot of questions that I didn’t understand, and it’s not easy to register a company in Hong Kong. Fortunately, I have you.

I originally thought that they only did mainland business, but I didn’t expect that they had been doing Hong Kong business and were doing very well. After the on-site interview, I decided to ask them to arrange the registration of my Hong Kong company. They helped me complete it very quickly and provided all the necessary information. The efficiency was awesome. It turns out that professional things should be done by professionals.👍

In order to register a company in Hong Kong, I compared many platforms and stores and finally chose this store. The merchant said that they have been operating offline for more than 10 years and are indeed an old team of corporate services. The efficiency is first-class, and the customer service is also very professional.
